Notice to the most nostalgic: the saga The Neverending Story is about to return to the cinema. The information was recently shared by ‘Variety”’ which claims that a new adaptation of the famous children’s novel by author Michael Ende is in preparation.

According to Variety, for several years now the heirs of Michael Ende have been seeking to embark on a new adaptation project by contacting studios and streaming platforms. It is finally the independent studio See-Saw films, known mainly for having produced several critical successes like The Son Or The speech of a kingwho will tackle this new adaptation.

Returning to the cinema, 30 years later

Bestseller in Germany since its publication in 1979, The never-ending story was translated into more than 45 languages ​​before attracting the interest of film studios who decided to produce a first film released in 1984. This first feature film met with some international success and then gave rise to two sequels in 1990 and 1995. The same year, a series of 26 episodes corresponding to the 26 chapters of the novel was broadcast on television.

The never-ending story follows the fate of Bastien, a shy and withdrawn young man, who one day comes across a strange book. After leafing through it in secret, the young man finds himself projected into a fantastic world led by the Little Empress, a young girl suffering from a strange illness which threatens the very existence of this fantastic world. In the company of Atreju, a courageous boy with green skin, Bastien will then have to save this world.

Michael Ende’s book is designed for a young audience, but is imbued with mature themes which give it a certain timelessness. See-Saw Films and the executors of Michael Ende intend to take advantage of the quality of the story to offer a contemporary version to the youngest spectators. For the moment, we do not yet know how many films the studio wishes to produce. No release date has been mentioned. “The journey, in many ways, begins now“, declared Iain Canning, producer at See-Saw Films. We will therefore have to be patient before we can discover the first images of this new adaptation.
