Culture news This Korean drama will keep you from sleeping: it haunts French cinemas after being unanimously acclaimed at festivals
South Korean cinema has been on the rise for several years, notably the coronation of Parasite at the Oscars. The drama directed by Bong Joon-ho left the ceremony with several statuettes including Best Film and Best Director. Four years later, South Korean cinema often appears in cinemas. At the end of February, it’s a horror film with a unique concept that will have you glued to your seat.
The new horrific Korean drama in cinemas
Presented for the first time in Europe during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, the new horror film from The Land of the Calm Morning stunned the audience gathered at the Gérardmer festival a few months later, which awarded it the Grand Prix. Released almost 5 months ago in South Korea, Sleep is finally arriving in French cinemas. Directed and scripted by Jason Yu, for whom this is the first film in this essential role, it stands out from other so-called “high concept” feature films by its methodical staging and its unique approach to fear.
Worn by the trio of actors and actresses Jung Yu-mi (Last Train to Busan), Lee Sun-kyun (Parasite, Hard Day) and Kim Gook-hee (1987: When the Day Comes), Sleep is undoubtedly the horror object to recommend to fans of the genre, insomniacs and all those who struggle to fall asleep. “Beware of him who sleeps”… the message could not be clearer. Sleep was released in cinemas in France on February 21, 2024.

Fans of K-drama and other South Korean films will probably be satisfied by the end of 2024. There are dozens of productions awaiting movie buffs and other series addicts, whether in the cinema or on the various streaming platforms (Netflix, Disney+, etc.).
