Six years ago now, Steven Spielberg returned with a vengeance with a huge science fiction blockbuster: Ready Player One, the principle of which fully exploited that of virtual reality. A sequel is now in the works, for good… a priori.
We are going to play a game
The least we can say, is that Steven Spielberg is a regular at cinematic classics : we owe him a number of cult feature films, sometimes with striking special effects (especially given the time in which they were filmed) and which have left a huge mark on people’s minds. Jurassic Park, Jaws, Indiana Jones, AND…. Yes, it does.
However, no one has ever made use of such computer-generated images as Ready Player One: released in 2018this science fiction film plunged us into a somewhat dystopian future where citizens, armed with ultra-immersive virtual reality technology, plunged into a gigantic connected metaverse. A gigantic open-world, home to thousands of pop-culture Easter eggs, in which the hero engages in a risky treasure hunt.
An experience that made waves when it arrived in theaters and which still garnered a whopping $607.9 million at the worldwide box office: moreover, Steven Spielberg had always expressed his desire to see a sequel appear one day… but had played tongue-in-cheek regarding the progress of the work. Today, we finally see things a little more clearly.
VR a proper sequel
It was during the Oscars ceremony which took place very recently that Steven Spielberg, present on site, gave some time to blogger Roger Friedman for a short interview: he revealed that yes, a sequel to Ready Player Two (that’s his nickname) was in the works and that for the moment, he would not ensure its production.
If this can be a real black point for the worshipers of the filmmaker – whose genius has long been proven, a real guarantee of quality – it is not the first time that this pattern has occurred : the American had already passed the torch for Jurassic Park III (the saga later becoming Jurassic World) or even Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. For Ready Player Two, he has not yet revealed who will be responsible for piloting this project, which we imagine to be enormous, but he will in any case wear the producer’s hat.
Remember that Ready Player One was adapted from the eponymous novel and that a sequel to the latter, Ready Player Two, was published in 2020 again from the pen of Ernest Cline. Unfortunately, the work was only lukewarmly received by critics: we therefore hope Spielberg and his team will manage to restore its image with its future adaptation which still does not have a release window.
