Crunchyroll recently broke a record, but not for the right reasons… A popular anime suffered the vengeance of its fans, who exploded the dislike counter to show their anger towards the creators, and the reason is quite understandable.

Dislikes to rain

Better not to offend anime fans Solo Leveling… An episode broadcast a few days ago marked a new record: that of the most disliked episode of Crunchyroll. With a counter which today stands at more than 74,000 dislikesepisode 7.5 of Solo Leveling is destroyed by the fans, and for a very simple reason: it is not an episode strictly speaking, but a recap of previous events. On the program, images and voices reused to summarize the story so far, without adding anything new to the narrative of Solo Leveling.

In itself, we can understand the disappointment of fans of the anime. They expected to discover the continuation of the adventures of Jin-wooand above all to know if he intended to accept the proposal of Jinho, and not having to rewatch scenes that they saw only the previous week. While it’s understandable to be disappointed that we’ll have to wait another week to learn more, the vehemence with which the community has rejected this recap is puzzling, especially since there’s likely a good reason for it. A-1 Pictures decided to postpone episode 8.

A fast-paced industry

Considered a filler episodeepisode 7.5 attracted the wrath of fans of Solo Leveling in need of new content. But as in any production, whether animated or live action, the filler episodes have their place, and above all a specific role to fulfill. In the case of Solo Levelingepisode 8 would have been delayed due to the state of health of Taito Banthe voice actor of Jin-woo. The actor reportedly contracted COVID-19 in early February, which could confirm rumors that he was coughing up blood during the recording of the fourth episode of the season.

Even if the state of health of Taito Ban is rather worrying, fans of Solo Leveling haven’t stopped disliking the recap yet. Their frustration is understandable, but given the consequences linked to the hard work of professionals like animators, mangakas, and K-Pop stars, a little compassion would not be refused. The question had already been raised when the working conditions of employees of MAPPA had been brought to light, but it is not new: we are thinking in particular of Ai Yazawathe creator of the manga NANAwho has been on hiatus since 2009 due to illness, and more recently Akira Toriyama who died of cancer at the age of 68.

None of this is surprising when we know the astronomical workload linked to this type of profession, but if the price to pay for these people to suffer less is to wait an extra week for an episode or a chapter, You might as well be patient. Let’s hope that the record number of likes for episode 8 will be enough to boost the morale of the creators of Solo Leveling…
