Bencic after a hard fight in the round of 16

Belinda Bencic (WTA 35) is in the round of 16 of the Ostrava WTA tournament. In the first round, the woman from Flawil beat the qualifier Eugenie Bouchard (WTA 506) 6:7 (7:9), 6:1, 6:4. Bencic was already ahead with a break in the first set, but then had to give up both the lead and the set. In rounds 2 and 3, Bencic couldn’t be broken anymore and, after more than two and a half hours, used her second match point to win. This win should be a good omen for Bencic: the 25-year-old has won twice in her career against the Canadian. Both times Bencic went on to win the tournament (Eastbourne and Toronto 2015). In the next round, the Swiss will meet Shelby Rogers (WTA 35) or Barbora Krejcikova (WTA 23).

US Open finalists eliminated early

At the ATP 500 hard court tournaments in Astana and Tokyo, the two top seeded players were eliminated in the first round. They are US Open winner Carlos Alcaraz and US Open finalist Casper Ruud, world Nos. 1 and 3 respectively. Alcaraz lost in Astana to former top 10 player David Goffin of Belgium, who is ranked 66th, 5-7, 3-6. Goffin got his place in the main tableau as the lucky loser. Ruud lost in Tokyo to the Spaniard Jaume Munar, number 58 in the world rankings, 3: 6, 3: 6. Munar took the serve from the Norwegian four times.
