Skull and Bones does not please everyone

If there is one game that the public has been eagerly awaiting at the start of the year, it is Skull and Bones. After being repeatedly rejected over several years, some people even wondered if it was really going to come out one day, and especially if it was going to be as good as its publisher wanted to claim. It must be said that it was sold by Ubisoft as the very first AAAA, at least for those who wanted to believe it. After a short beta period and almost a week after its release, it’s time to make a first assessment about the beginning of Skull and Bones’ journey.

With a score Metacritic of 57, Ubisoft’s AAAA is struggling to convince the press and the public. If we look at the different notes on this same aggregator, we realize that the players are much more severe that the press with an average of 3.1/10. At JV, we decided to give it a score of 15/20 emphasizing the successful naval battles, the fun of the game and the qualities of the endgame. But then, in this ocean of uncertainties, has the game suffered a wreck in terms of sales? At the moment, not really.

It’s not a disaster, but is it a success?

Almost a week after its official release, we are already able to know the number of players who have been tempted by the adventure of piracy. According to the sources of our colleagues at InsiderGamingSkull and Bones has so far attracted around 850,000 players, a little less than the symbolic one million mark.. Please note, this figure also includes players taking advantage of the 8-hour free trial granted by Ubisoft. If the average playing time of players fluctuates between 3 and 4 hours per day, you will need to recheck these figures in a few days to see if they remain stable. It also remains to be seen whether players who have simply played the trial version will purchase the game to continue their adventure.

In itself, the figure of 850,000 players alone proves that the game is not really the trainwreck that some might have expected. But is it really up to the AAAA rating that Ubisoft was hoping for? If we compare it to other recent releases or even other productions from the studio, not really. Helldivers II, for example, managed to reach the mark of one million copies sold in just three days, and we won’t even go back to Palworld which had simply taken over the entire industry at the time of its release. Eventually, Skull and Bones seems to have a success close to that of Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which was estimated to have sold between 8,000,000 and 1.4 million during the first week of release (based on the game statistics revealed by Ubisoft at that time). Obviously, it’s still a little early to make real comparisons, especially given the type of game that Skull and Bones is. We will certainly have to wait for Ubisoft’s annual financial report to determine whether the game is a real success or not.
