News in the video: Baby elephant in Cologne Zoo takes first steps in life

There are fresh offspring of elephants in the Cologne Zoo. The little female elephant was born on Thursday night. The zoo announced in the morning. Zoo director Theo Pagel had followed the birth via webcam from home and rushed straight to the offspring after the birth.

"We are very, very happy"

And the good news is that everything looks very healthy: "So the elephant cow is so fit that we are letting it out now," says Pagel. "It's not even 24 hours old. It was really yesterday after two hours on the mother's breast. The herd was very well taken care of, which is also important. We are one of the zoological gardens that gave birth in of the group. That means that all the animals are there, so they also learn what it means to have offspring. And we have found that this is also helpful for those who will have young in the next generation. And yes "We are very, very happy today. And the little one has already sniffed the leaves with its trunk. I think we never had that quickly. And we hope that it will continue like this." The little pachyderm does not yet have a name. But it will come. And the zoo has already announced that the name will of course be announced in due course. Until then, the little one needs to acclimatize quickly in the summer of Cologne and continue to discover his new home.
