The origin of protorelics in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Note: This guide contains spoilers for all ancillary content related to investigation reports. Stop there if you prefer to discover the story behind it yourself.

In Final Fantasy VII Rebirthmany quests and other side activities await you in each region, including the Chadley Investigation Reports which will ask you to find traces of mysterious objects called ”’protorelics”’ as part of scripted missions. Each area will offer you different challenges, such as fights and mini-games that you will have to learn to master to learn more about the protorelics. The origin of these elements is very mysterious, but if you are on this page, it is because you doubtless suspect the real identity of the eccentric swashbuckler which you may come across several times during your investigations.

THE eccentric swashbucklerfrom his real name Gilgameshis a character (literally) from another world, since he never appeared in Final Fantasy VII. He first appeared in Final Fantasy V as an antagonist, and returns in the majority of titles to date, including remakes of older games, switching from ally to adversary with each appearance. In FF7 Rebirthhe is first considered as an enemy, since he tries to steal the protorelics which are in fact Genji gear parts which belong to him. But its role may change as you progress through the investigation reports…

Summary of the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth walkthrough

You will have the opportunity to face Gilgamesh twice during your research on protorelics. But it is only once you have reached the end of the 24 investigation reports of the Top 6 regions of the game that you will discover his real identity, and that he will give you a new challenge to take on. Gilgamesh will ask you to join him on his island, aptly named Gilgamesh Islandwith the aim of fighting to recover his Genji gear parts.

To reach his island, you must of course have completed the 24 investigation reportswhich is not possible before having been contacted by Gob the Kid at the end of Chapter 12. If you’re following the story, you need to go to the Northwood area At the beginning of Chapter 13but the entry of Gilgamesh Island is on the way. All you have to do is follow the path to take on the challenge of Gilgameshbut know that you will need to be close to the level 70 to succeed without suffering too much, then you will have to practice (or wait until you have completed the game to benefit from a considerable experience boost).
