What are medals for in Helldivers 2?

If you are one of the many players who have fallen for the brand new cooperative shooter Helldivers II available on PC and PlayStation 5, you have probably already noticed that you can earn several different resources during your missions. Samples, super-credits, requisitions… most of the game’s currencies can be found directly in your games. But if there’s one resource that you’re going to need en masse, it’s medals.

Indeed, it is thanks to medals that you will be able to purchase new weapons, grenades, armor, bonus effects and even cosmetic elements as you progress in your Battle Pass. As in many service games, Helldivers II offers its own Battle Pass in which you will be able to recover many sometimes essential objects. Whether you have chosen to go for the paid Battle Pass or not, spending medals will allow you to both collect equipment and unlock the following pages. However, by exploring the last pages of the two Battle Passes available upon release, you will quickly notice that you will need a lot of medals. But then, how to earn as much as possible?

There are several ways to collect medals in Helldivers II. First, know that you can find them directly in your games by searching the remarkable sites located here and there in the explorable areas. If you open your eyes, you will indeed be able to see some light spots emanate from what look like small bases, often guarded by a few adversaries. We advise you to always go to the origin of these light spots and open them coffers that you will find there. Sometimes you will be able to do this with a simple key press, sometimes you will need to open a two button door (you will necessarily have to play cooperatively for this), and other times it will be necessary throw a grenade at the door of a container to open it and recover what it hides. In any case, you can find very useful objects inside, including famous medals. However, note that when you find medals this way, you will only be able to collect two or three at a time, which will not be enough for you to unlock the last pages of the Battle Pass.

If there is one very effective way to collect as many medals as possible: it is quite simply by completing missions. Indeed, at the end of each successful mission, you will collect a certain number of medals depending on the difficulty in which you play. In the first levels, you should leave with 1, 2 or 3 medals at the end of a mission, which will be enough to unlock the first elements of the Battle Pass but which may quickly seem too little to you. To earn as many medals as possible, you will have no other choice than to tackle high-level missions. Indeed, level 7, 8 and 9 operations will require you to complete up to three missions in a row and may allow you to collect around thirty medals at a time. Unfortunately, high level missions are very difficult and require playing with several people and in a very different way than low level ones. If you are having trouble surviving these difficulties, we refer you to our dedicated guide.

Finally, know that there is a third, very effective method for collecting medals. Indeed, it is possible to accomplish a different personal goal once per day. The latter can be consulted by opening the “Orders” menu at the bottom right of your screen (accessible on your ship) or by looking at the bottom right of the pause screen. The personal objective changes daily and often requires you to eliminate a certain number of enemies in this or that way. For example, since the game was released, we have seen objectives like “Kill 400 insects”, “Kill 200 enemies with the machine gun” or even “Kill 3 chargers”. Once you have accomplished the objective, you will be able to access the reward which will very often be around fifteen medals. Note that the progression of this objective is done in groups: if you must eliminate 200 enemies with a machine gun and you are in a group of 4, each enemy eliminated with a machine gun by any of your companions will also count for you and vice versa.
