Angela Merkel hopes for common sense during the pandemic.

Despite countermeasures, the corona virus continues to spread in Germany. In an unusually emotional speech, Angela Merkel appeals to all of us to take the contact restrictions seriously.

Somehow you have to feel sorry for Angela Merkel: She has been trying to keep the corona pandemic under control practically all year round by taking countermeasures – and now, shortly before the general vaccination start, everything is really getting out of hand. In a speech she was now clearer than ever before – and in doing so, it showed how close she is to the crisis and the selfishness of those who accept the spread of the virus.

"We can't ask humans to do that"

From a medical point of view, there is a clear signal that stricter contact restrictions will quickly lower the infection rate again. From a non-medical point of view, many people only like mulled wine if they can drink it in a cozy group of people, where they chat and sing Christmas carols (a view that the coronavirus shares out of self-interest). And so Angela Merkel has to point out facts that actually do not need to be further explained: Around 500 deaths a day are a tragedy. We should all restrict contact with other people as much as we can, even if it is difficult for us. And that in a pandemic of the century we are negotiating little things that will look shamefully petty in retrospect.

Outlook for Christmas – and beyond

Despite everything, Angela Merkel remains confident that we are already through the worst of the pandemic – after all, the vaccine is already in the starting blocks and will soon be able to be used on a large scale in Germany. Your message is clear: Now it is up to all of us to be disciplined for a few more weeks and to protect each other – so that we can celebrate Christmas with the whole family next year.
