News video: Baby in coma after putting detergent pod in mouth

Detergent pods are life-threatening for children – a mother who had only lost sight of her son for a moment had to experience this. In the video you can see why the child is fortunately now in dire danger.

It was really only a brief moment that Melissa turned her back on her son Pearce while she started the washing machine. But the moment was enough for the ten-month-old boy to grab a capsule of detergent that had fallen unnoticed on the floor and take a quick bite. He immediately showed signs of dangerous poisoning and had to be put into a coma in the intensive care unit.

"It looked like his eyes were dead"

Fortunately, both of Pearce's parents acted immediately: even before the poisoning could take effect, they immediately drove their baby to the hospital. Just a few minutes later, while driving, the baby developed diarrhea and vomited. Then his condition deteriorated alarmingly quickly. "He went very limp and looked at me, but it looked like his eyes were dead," Melissa later told the Daily Record. At the hospital, doctors found that the detergent had already aggressively attacked the young child's stomach and lungs – the only way out was to put Pearce into an artificial coma. In the meantime, the baby has been brought back out of a coma – and it looks as if it will survive the misfortune. Pearce parents now hope that this calamity can at least save other families from a similar catastrophe, and serves as a strong warning not to keep detergent tablets within the reach of children.
