News video: Coronavirus – federal and state governments decide on "Lockdown Light"

The federal and state governments agreed on Wednesday to close all leisure facilities for the whole of November.

"We must – and I also say this from my perspective – we must and will do everything to ensure that schools and daycare centers remain open." (Berlin's Governing Mayor Michael Müller (SPD)) Only schools, daycare centers, shops and churches are to remain open in November. The restaurant closes for the entire month, leisure activities and travel are prohibited. That roughly sums up the corona summit of the federal and state governments on Wednesday.

Financial aid for the crisis

Chancellor Angela Merkel: "We are severely restricting leisure activities: theaters, operas, concert halls and all facilities, trade fairs, amusement parks." The gastronomy – and thus bars, clubs and restaurants – must close in November. The same goes for theaters, cinemas and fitness studios. For companies, they have agreed on new financial aid of up to ten billion euros. There is no other way of "getting out of the exponential growth" in the number of infections, said Merkel: "We can say that our health system can still cope with the challenge today. But if the rate of infections remains at this rate, we will reach the limits of our capabilities within weeks. "

Only the most necessary contacts

Contacts with other people outside of the household should be reduced to an absolutely necessary minimum. Staying in public is only permitted with the members of your own household and with another household, but in any case a maximum of 10 people. Shops, however, should remain open. It was agreed that every ten square meters one customer could be in the shops. The measures will come into effect on November 2nd and will be maintained for four weeks. The Robert Koch Institute reported a new high in Germany with almost 15,000 new infections on Wednesday.
