News video: First company gives employees extra "menstrual vacation days"

It is often impossible to work normally with menstrual pain and severe cramps. An Indian company has now drawn the necessary conclusions: In the video you can see why there are now ten additional vacation days for employees.

There are so many things about your period that can make your life hell – but having to work concentrated while cramped has probably been at the top of the list for many of us since school. The Indian company "Zomato" has now recognized that something has to change: women there are now entitled to ten paid vacation days so that they do not have to continue working if they have particularly severe period pain.

No more stigma

For the company's management, the move was long overdue: "There should be no shame or stigma about having to take time off because of your period," so the announcement to the employees. "You should simply inform the colleagues in your groups, either directly or by email, that you will no longer work that day." Women's rights activists welcomed the move as an important signal and are already hoping that this measure could be implemented worldwide – as, for example, maternity leave and parental leave have done.

Praise and critical dissenting voices

Other women viewed the measure rather critically and sometimes even as a step backwards on the way to real equality between the sexes. After all, according to the critics, women cannot demand that they be treated (and paid) no differently from their male colleagues when they are simultaneously taking more vacation days. With the same argument, of course, the hard-won maternity leave could be wrapped up as a "step backwards", which is why this counter-argument is only partially effective. And of course, quite a few insulted men reported promptly on the Internet who complained about the "special treatment". But let's be honest: They would also be the first to call in sick in the long term if they had to accept an unpleasant and painful bleeding every four weeks.
