Newspapers & magazines from the library at no additional cost

We have already described in this magazine that users of a public library can also borrow e-books in the same way as printed books. In addition, there are other little-known rental options on the Internet.

Borrowing from public libraries works on the PC in the browser and via the Onleihe app on a smartphone or tablet and an e-book reader – with the exception of Amazon Kindle devices. Your personal access data for the local library serve as free access. More information including a list of all participating libraries in Germany and other countries can be found online at www.onleihe.net.

The other loan options via the Internet are hardly known. This includes audio books (also in the Onleihe app), e-books, radio plays, music and audio books for children via the Tigerbooks app (Android and iOS), films and series via Filmfriend as well as newspapers and magazines via Pressreader (Android, iOS and browsers). The range of press readers is huge with over 7000 titles. To find out what content your library has, log in again with your library access in the app or in the browser. In addition to the targeted search, Pressreader offers the option of filtering the offer by country and language. The view for reading is very well implemented, this even works with newspapers on the small smartphone screen. The headings of all articles on the entire pages are interactive. They can be tapped, the selected article then switches to the reading view for mobile devices.

The Pressreader app provides access to magazines and newspapers via a library card. Reading also works well on a smartphone (right).

Although the selection of magazines is usually much smaller than with Readly, this commercial magazine flat rate also costs just under ten euros a month. The annual fee for a library card, on the other hand, is usually between 20 and 40 euros, i.e. two to three euros per month, and is significantly cheaper than Readly. If you already have the card, the online offer is free for you.

Tip:

E-books: Borrow digital books as a subscription instead of buying them individually
