Next excitement – Saalbach flies out of the World Cup, Zell out of the European Cup

After Saalbach’s dissatisfaction with being removed from the World Cup calendar for the coming season, neighboring Zell am See is now also “bitten”. “A cheek,” says the ski club boss.

The “broadside” against Saalbach is sitting: As the location of the 2025 World Cup, the Pinzgauers were canceled the men’s World Cup races planned for January 2023 by the international ski association. The 2024 World Cup final should not take place there either. Instead, it should go to the USA (Aspen) for five years. That should be decided on Wednesday. New management stirs things up It was clear that the new FIS boss Johan Eliasch would stir things up a lot. But the new management has to be careful not to mess with everyone right away. Because in the men’s race, Kvitfjell is off the calendar after 29 years, and the Kandahar races in Garmisch were initially not taken into account. Now, after fierce complaints, they are back – Saalbach has to believe it. No race in Saalbach, but five in Garmisch. Strange: Since Garmisch also gets a men’s night slalom (instead of Zagreb) on January 4th, the Bavarians and women suddenly have five races (!) in the calendar. Which also includes new destinations such as Zermatt or Palisades Tahoe (USA). But there are still many question marks. For example, with the new descent in Zermatt, which begins in Switzerland and ends in Italy, it should not even be clear which ski club is holding the races. Nothing works without functioning ski clubs.Zell am See had hoped for the World Cup, so next season Salzburg is only on the World Cup calendar with the Flachau Slalom. Bitter: Now Zell am See has also been kicked out of the European Cup program. “First the Kasperltheater around Saalbach, now that. A cheek,” says Zell’s ski club boss Fritz Unterganschnigg. “We held European Cup races for 15 years, got the best ratings and hoped for the World Cup. Nothing will come of it, that’s why we will orientate ourselves differently as a ski club in the future.” Another well-known organizer is lost (angry).
