Next incident – Bruck/Mur: European flag stolen by vandals

Once again a flag thief struck in Bruck an der Mur in Upper Styria. After rainbow flags, the EU flag was now the victim. The opposition is demanding an explanation from the city government.

Bruck an der Mur has one more act of vandalism behind it: On Sunday night, unknown perpetrators stole a European flag from the flag square on the main square. She was hoisted on the mast. Fortunately, according to information from the city, it was not damaged. In order to steal the flag, the perpetrator had to damage a barrier. The amount of damage is still unknown. The thing with the rainbow flagIt is not the first time that symbols of a democratic society have been attacked in Bruck an der Mur. In June 2022, a rainbow flag disappeared too early, this year it was hoisted again for “Pride Month” in early summer – and stolen again. A second was hoisted together with drag queen Gloria Hole – but this didn’t last long either. Strangers tried to set it on fire on the first night, and a week later it was gone. As a way out, the stairs to the Schiffländ were decorated in rainbow colors, but at the beginning of October they were daubed – including the number 88, which stands for “Heil Hitler”. The Green Party councilor Jacqueline Staber called for a statement from the mayor and the city office director on social media: “There can no longer be any silent tolerance for these acts!” The perpetrators are “obviously no longer comfortable with pluralism and democracy”. Neos local councilor Sebastian Wintschnig has announced that he will demand better monitoring of the main square at the next local council meeting. “Enough is enough!” SPÖ: No more surveillanceSPÖ Vice Mayor Silke Reitbauer-Rieger rejects this: “It affects and saddens me. “Despite everything, I don’t think greater surveillance and control would be effective, I like living in a free country,” the politician wrote on Facebook. The Bruck an der Mur police station is asking for information on: 059 133 6200.
