Spain gets drunk with the highest World Cup victory

The Spanish national soccer team underlined their role as favorites in Group E at the start of the World Cup. A Bundesliga professional opens the scoring for the 2010 world champion.

Fast, merciless – and quite threatening: Spain started the World Cup with a gala performance and flexed its muscles before the duel with Germany. The Furia Roja overwhelmed an overwhelmed Costa Rica 7-0 (3-0), just the young stars around Ferran Torres and Gavi enthusiastic. Spain underlined their claims to their second title after 2010 with their highest World Cup victory in history.

For the German national team, however, this World Cup has become a lot more complicated on Wednesday: A few hours after the bitter opening defeat against Japan (1: 2), Spain, which was already rated strong, grew into a huge opponent in Group E, against which the DFB team played on Sunday (8 p.m./ZDF, MagentaTV and in the live ticker on ntv.de) must score.

Leipzig’s Dani Olmo (11′) opened the scoring, Marco Asensio (21′), Ferran Torres (31′, penalty kick/54′) with a brace, Gavi (74′), Carlos Soler (90′) and Alvaro Morata (90′). .+2) also contributed to the win. Coach Luis Enrique’s young team played variably and without frills – and Spain also won their opening game at a World Cup for the first time since 2006.

The average age of the Spaniards was a big topic before the tournament, a “kindergarten” is targeting the title, it was said. Because only one of the world champions of 2010 remained, captain Sergio Busquets (34) wants to know it again. Around him is the fourth youngest team in this tournament, nine players were born after the turn of the millennium – and three of them were in the starting XI.

Olmo scores number 100

Gavi (18), Pedri (19) and Torres (22) are already pillars of the team, that was evident early on. Spain combined rapidly in the first few minutes, Costa Rica didn’t even get into this game. It was then Gavi who played a one-two with Olmo, the Leipzig player took the ball with him and completed it with a lob.

At 24, Olmo is already one of the more experienced Spaniards and his goal was a special one: the 100th in the country’s World Cup history, only five nations have scored more at a finals: Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Italy and France.

Then one of the old guard showed that the Ü30 group can also play football: Jordi Alba prepared the 2-0 through Asensio, again it went quickly on the outside. A little later, Alba was fouled in the penalty area – and left one of the youngsters: Torres casually converted from the point.

For Costa Rica’s goalkeeper icon Keylor Navas (35), the World Cup would actually be a rare opportunity to excel, at Paris St. Germain he is only a substitute. On Wednesday, however, that was hardly possible. Torres marked his second goal, Gavi initiated again – and then scored himself.
