NFL delivers big stories
Monster touchdown, a bitter Burrow show and a serious storm
October 7, 2024, 6:31 a.m
Great achievements do not prevent great pain: The Seattle Seahawks celebrate the longest touchdown of the NFL season so far and still lose, Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow throws five touchdown passes and still has to watch his team lose a thriller.
The longest touchdown of the season wasn’t enough for the Seattle Seahawks. Against the New York Giants, Rayshawn Jenkins grabbed a dropped ball and carried it across the entire field into the end zone, but the 20:29 defeat could not prevent this early lead. And that was also because the Giants scored in a spectacular way: When the Seahawks wanted to score a field goal to make it 23:23 shortly before the end, the Giants blocked the attempt and escaped with the football into the other end zone.
Stuttgart’s Jakob Johnson was not in the squad for the game, which gave the Giants only their second win of the season – and Seattle, after three wins at the start, already their second defeat in a row. “You have to give the Giants credit that they were better than us today,” Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said.
The Washington Commanders now have four wins from five games, winning the home game against the Cleveland Browns 34:14. The team, with the German Brandon Coleman in an important role as protector of quarterback Jayden Daniels, has now won four games in a row and is as good as it was at this point in the season in 2008.
Crime victory ends Jacksonville’s horror streak
On his 25th birthday, quarterback Trevor Lawrence ended his long dry spell with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL professional football league. Thanks to kicker Cam Little, the team won 37:34 against the Indianapolis Colts, it was the first win for Jacksonville since December 31, 2023.
The Jaguars started the season with defeats against the Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans, but now things have turned around. The last success so far was a 26-0 win over the Carolina Panthers on the penultimate matchday of the 2023/24 main round.
The duel with the Colts was extremely exciting. Jacksonville increased the lead to 34:20 with just over five minutes left, then Indianapolis, led by quarterback Joe Flacco, drew level with two touchdowns. With 17 seconds on the clock, kicker Little fired the Jags to victory with a 49-yard field goal.
Burrow casts magic and still loses
The fans in Cincinnati saw the most turbulent game of the game day in their Bengals’ 38:41 overtime defeat against the Baltimore Ravens. Joe Burrow had a strong performance with five touchdown passes, as did his teammate Ja’Marr Chase, who scored two touchdowns and caught passes for a total of 193 yards. All four of the Bengals’ defeats were more than close: the team never lost by more than six points – but there is still a bitter record in the books.
The fact that the Bengals still lost for the fourth time in five games was due to Lamar Jackson on the other side. The quarterback led his team to its third win of the season with four touchdown passes. A few minutes before the end of the game, the Bengals were still leading by two touchdowns, then Jackson turned things around and led his team into overtime. A field goal was enough to secure a comeback triumph.
Burrow, who gained 392 yards and played his best game of the season, was angry after the thriller: “We’re not a championship-caliber team at the moment. That’s not us,” he told reporters after the game. “I’d like to think we’ll come back and improve as the season goes on to get to this point. But right now we’re not. And we have to get better.” He is frustrated that his team is still running behind their own demands.
Storms leave cowboys cold
The late game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys started more than an hour and a half late due to strong thunderstorms in Pittsburgh. And it turned into a tough game late in the game, which ended in a thriller. The lead changed three times in the final quarter, but in the end the Steelers were no longer able to counter: Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott sent Jalen Tolbert into the end zone with a short pass with 20 seconds left, well after midnight.
When the Cowboys’ 20:17 was perfect, it was already 1 a.m. in Pittsburgh. “We have a play that we love and that we are very confident in, regardless of the defense,” Prescott said of the dramatic finale. “The offensive line did a great job, Tolbert was open on the left and all I had to do was make the throw.” It was the Steelers’ second loss of the season.
