NFT: 101 monkeys for the price of 19 million

Sotheby’s is auctioning two NFT packages from the Bored Ape Yacht Club and can no longer stop being amazed.

The worldwide active auction house Sotheby’s has seen a lot in its long history, but should have looked twice on September 6th. A package of 101 bored looking monkeys from the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), a limited NFT collection, have a bid of $ 19 million obtain. The offer thus exceeded the expected auction value – a whole three days before the auction even comes to an end. This is scheduled for September 9 at 4:01 p.m. (Central European Summer Time).

Why are these monkeys worth so much?

Since the monkeys are digital works of art, one possible answer to this is obvious: Because aesthetics are worth so much to someone. Another reason may be the secrecy and fun that come with these NFTs. Each monkey is unique and randomly generated from a “pool of characteristics” that includes 170 different components. They are stored as ERC-721 tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. According to the founders: there is a fixed number of monkeys, currently 10,000. This can also be expanded by a maximum of 30 pieces in the future.

Exclusive bathroom included

But it doesn’t stop at the mere monkey: With the proof of ownership (i.e. the NFT) you get exclusive access to different offers of the above “Yacht Club”. For example, you get access to a virtual bathroom in which everyone: r can “smear” a pixel. Last week there was also the option of an expanded copy of his monkey, the mutated “zombie” monkey. With a free ‘serum’ that the club distributed to the BAYC owners via airdrop, the mutant monkeys could be created themselves.

In addition to NFT monkeys, there are also NFT dogs

Another offer from the club made headlines in the past: At that time, monkey owners had a one-week chance at another, almost free NFT. These show different, also randomly generated dogs in the same style. A package of 101 Bored Ape Kennel Club dogs from the Sotheby’s Auction house auctioned will. The purchase price is currently 550,000 US dollars for the package. It is expected to cost between $ 1.5 million and $ 2 million for this. But even with the four-legged counterparts to the monkeys, the targeted sum could again be exceeded many times over.

Treasure hunt of the bargain hunters: inside

Originally, each of these monkeys could be purchased for 0.08 ETH. The founders set target sales as a percentage during the sale. When these were achieved, they performed different tasks. One of them is currently still open: The 80 percent sales target unlocked a “mysterious note”, which starts a “treasure hunt”. The first to solve the puzzle will be rewarded with 5 ETH and a bored monkey. Everyone else can rely on OpenSea buy a bored NFT monkey or NFT dog at will. The current minimum price for a monkey lies even only at 41.85 ETH. That’s $ 162,904.47. As already mentioned, your companions are already cheaper – here lies the starting price at just 2.95 ETH, i.e. 11,498.07 US dollars – a real bargain.
