NFT: The first SMS in history to be auctioned soon

“Merry Christmas”, said the very first SMS sent on December 3, 1992 at exactly 6:09 pm and received by an Orbitel 901 telephone. This little moment in digital history will be sold as NFT this Tuesday, December 21 by Vodafone.

The telephone operator is riding on the craze around Non Fungible Tokens to transfer ownership of this historic NFT estimated between 100,000 and 200,000 euros. All the profits will be donated to the United Nations refugee agency.

On the site of the house Aggutes, which manages this auction, it is stressed that in addition to the NFT which will be transferred to the blockchain at the highest bidder of this sale, this one will receive a certificate of authenticity signed by the Managing Director of Vodafone Nick Read, as well as two small tables, one containing a copy of the computer code of the SMS made on the computer that sent it and a photo of the Orbitel mobile when it was received.

Auctions where prices soar

If the estimate of the selling price may seem high, it remains below what could be offered by buyers. Some believe that the price could exceed a million euros. The NFT of the first Tweet of Jack Dorsey, founder of Twitter, had indeed sold for $ 2.9 million in March 2021, while the computer program behind the Web had been auctioned for more than 5.4 million of dollars in June.

Several brands have recently invested in NFT technology, such as Nike and Adidas, which are entering the blockchain-encrypted virtual clothing market in order to certify their authenticity.
