Nice: conveyors lose a jewel worth 170,000 euros, a motorist seizes it


Thanks to the license plates of his vehicle, the driver was quickly identified and arrested. The jewel was found at his home and returned to its owner.

Four individuals were taken into police custody at the Nice police station last week, after the loss by two conveyors of a precious stone estimated at around 170,000 euros, indicates to the Figaro the Nice public prosecutor’s office, confirming information from News17.

The facts occurred on February 2, in the middle of the afternoon, at the level of the boulevard du Mercantour, in Nice. Employees of a Monegasque cash-in-transit company, the two couriers took to the road with said piece of jewelery and later noticed “a long moment”according to a police source, that a package had been lost and that it had undoubtedly fallen on the road, during the journey.

Warned and mobilized in the process, the agents of the Departmental Security began their investigations by the exploitation of video surveillance images of the city. Stunned, they then noticed that the vehicle of the conveyors circulated with the side door open, and had no difficulty in seeing, on the images, the parcel falling on the macadam. Several cars passed by without noticing it, but a motorist stopped a few moments later, collecting the package before resuming his journey and disappearing. Thanks to the license plates of this Volkswagen Golf, the driver was quickly identified.

The gemstone returned to its owner

Aged 32 and 35, the driver and his passenger were arrested in Saint-Laurent-du-Var the same day, shortly before 8 p.m., and placed in police custody. The two conveyors; aged 34 and 32, were also. Security investigators suspect complicity between the four suspects, who are unknown to the police. A track quickly dismissed in view of the hearings and the explanations provided by each. The two employees were released without prosecution.

The jewel was found at the home of the driver of the Golf, during a search.
