Nicky Larson on Netflix: the new film will be the most faithful adaptation of the manga!


Netflix has unveiled a new trailer for its live-action film “Nicky Larson”, adapted from the manga “City Hunter”, available from April 25!

“When his silhouette appears the bad guys start to tremble, they know that they will never be able to escape this vigilante.” Anyone who grew up with Club Dorothée cartoons will be able to recognize the words of the credits of the iconic Nicky Larson, the animated series adapted from the manga City Hunter by Tsukasa Hojo.

Several adaptations have already seen the light of day

The subject of numerous criticisms at the time of its broadcast due to its unsuitability for young children, the series nevertheless reached us in a censored version. Many dialogues were rewritten for the needs of the French version, and graphic passages (nudity and violence, in particular) were deleted during editing.

Among the biggest manga successes of the 80s, City Hunter was adapted several times for the cinema under its name Nicky Larson: a parody version with Jackie Chan notably saw the light of day in the 90s, as well as a French version designed and performed by Philippe Lacheau (Nicky Larson and the Perfume of Cupidon).

The most faithful adaptation to the original manga?

A new live-action version will soon be released on Netflix. This is the very first live-action filmed in Japanese: Ryo Saeba (Nicky Larson in VF) will be played on this occasion by Ryohei Suzuki and his partner Kaori (Laura) is played by Misato Morita. The film’s cast also includes Masanobu Ando and Misaki Ayame.

The new trailer for the new Nicky Larson film announces a faithful adaptation of the manga, both in the plot and in the tone mixing humor and action. Aficionados of the original work will also be able to appreciate the numerous nods present in this trailer, and in particular the use of the music from the end credits of the anime (Get Wild).

Live-action is on the rise on Netflix… and TF1?

Nicky Larson confirms Netflix’s interest in live-action adaptations of successful manga. After the disappointments Death Note and Cowboy Bebop, the platform achieved more convincing results, thanks to its Alice in Borderland, One Piece and Yu Yu Hakusho series. While waiting for the My Hero Academia film and the Death Note series designed by the creators of Stranger Things…

Let us also remember that Cat’s Eyes, another emblematic manga by Tsukasa Hojo, will be adapted this year into a live-action series by TF1. Currently filming, the series stars Claire Romain, Constance Labbé and Camille Lou in the three main roles.

The Nicky Larson film can be found exclusively on Netflix from April 25.
