Some actors make a film and then take a break of several years. Not Nicolas Cage: Cage appeared in 6 films this year. From blockbusters to indie gems to barely noticed DVD productions, everything was there again.
The debts that once forced Cage to film marathons have long since been paid off; now Cage simply plays because he likes to. Variety is very important to him, as he reveals in a new interview with Uproxx. His next roles should be all the more varied, because after three or four more films Cage wants to take a new direction.

I like to always do something new. I don’t want to limit myself to a certain genre or style. I want to do everything. And I feel like at this point – after 45 years of doing this and that in over 100 films – I’ve pretty much said everything I needed to say in the movies. And I would like to leave with a good feeling and say “adios”. I think I need to do three or four more films before I can achieve that, and then hopefully switch formats and find a different way to express my acting.

Due to Cage’s high filming speed, we could expect the last film with Nicolas Cage as early as 2025. However, Cage admits that these are ideas that have only recently occurred to him, so it’s not impossible that he might change his mind.
However, there is no talk of retirement. Although Cage wants to spend more time with his family, it was “Breaking Bad” in particular that made him change his mind.
I saw Bryan Cranston stare at a suitcase for an hour in an episode of Breaking Bad. We don’t have time for that in a feature film, so maybe TV is the next step for me.
