The 56-year-old will replace Martin Hirsch on July 5, who led the French hospital group for ten years.
Nicolas Revel, former chief of staff of Jean Castex at Matignon, has been appointed head of the Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP), according to the report of the Council of Ministers on Monday. At the age of 56, he succeeds Martin Hirsch, who for nearly ten years had directed the leading French hospital group (39 establishments, nearly 100,000 employees).

If Nicolas Revel spent his last years at Matignon, he is a fine connoisseur of the health system: he directed Health Insurance between 2014 and 2020, the date of his entry into office with Jean Castex. Nicolas Revel was also, alongside Emmanuel Macron, deputy secretary general of the Elysée under François Hollande. His predecessor, Martin Hirsch, had been in office since November 2013. Faced with a structural crisis in the public hospital, but above all with the Covid-19 epidemic in recent years, the former High Commissioner for Active Solidarity against Poverty and Youth under the mandate of Nicolas Sarkozy had tried to keep the public hospital afloat. With in particular Aurélien Rousseau, then director of the ARS of Île-de-France and current director of cabinet… of Élisabeth Borne.
“A new framework»
In his resignation letter dated mid-June, Martin Hirsch looked back on these difficult months: “We have shown, in the storm of a pandemic, that we know how to work differently, make the most of our qualities, put aside our faults, show unfailing solidarity. We must now define a new framework, based on trust and responsibility, which allows us to act in the same way, but in all weathers.”
