But at Les Républicains, several elected officials fear that he will choose to support Emmanuel Macron. It must be said that since 2017, Nicolas Sarkozy has shown himself particularly close to the Head of State. And with the approach of new elections, the current tenant of the Elysee Palace would try to compose an alliance between La République En Marche and the right-wing party, through its predecessor.
“Emmanuel Macron? I have the key to its failure or its success ”
Friday, March 12, 2021, a lunch organized between Nicolas Sarkozy, François Baroin and Christian Jacob caused much talk on the LR side. Some elected officials fear that the former President “make a deal to help Emmanuel Macron to his re-election by imposing in exchange a Prime Minister, in this case François Baroin ”, as revealed The Figaro. Because for the moment, the right has not yet appointed its representative for 2022. “If we have a candidate capable of shaking up the match, I don’t see how Sarkozy could not support his political family ”, explains an elected official to our colleagues. The latter, however, thinks that “If we have a testimonial application, he can deal with Macron” in order to prevent the National Rally – led by Marine Le Pen – from gaining power.
For his part, Nicolas Sarkozy believes he holds the electoral future of Emmanuel Macron in his hands. Despite his legal setbacks, the former President effectively retains considerable influence. A political legacy on which the youngest of the Elysée bosses would certainly not spit… “Emmanuel Macron? I have the key to his failure or his success”, would also have declared Nicolas Sarkozy to an elected official of his clan, while “showing very critical of the management of the crisis and the policy pursued ” currently by the presidency, reports Le Figaro. A speech that leaves doubt on his strategy for 2022 … Because if he were to support Emmanuel Macron, the latter would be almost assured of his re-election. Conversely, if he decided to propose an LR candidate, it would be a cold shower for the head of LREM. For the moment, Nicolas Sarkozy does not intend to say more: “We can’t wait for me to nominate the candidate. May they all be candidates and may the best prevail! But you have to go. You have to assert yourself. You have to dare! ”
