Nigeria: Official toll of 22 dead in the attack on a Catholic church

OWO, Nigeria (Reuters) – Twenty-two people were killed and 50 others were injured in an attack on a Catholic church during a Pentecost Mass in Owo, southwestern Nigeria, said on Sunday. Tuesday an official of the national emergency services agency, delivering the first official report of the killing.

According to local media, more than 50 people were killed in the attack carried out by assailants armed with firearms and explosives.

The authorities have so far provided no information on the identity or motivations of the killers. The town of Owo is in Ondo State, which is usually spared from religious violence.

Police found unexploded bombs and bullet casings from assault rifles on the spot. She said Monday that some attackers had infiltrated among the faithful.
