Nikon unveiled on June 29 the newcomer to its catalog ofmirrorless cameras : the Z 30. With this discreet case, designed to be drawn quickly, the manufacturer is above all targeting vloggers and videographers of all stripes looking for a device that is both compact and efficient.
He is small, he knows about video and he arrives this summer. The Z 30 is for those who want to put their smartphone aside and take it to the next level without the hassle of a large, hard-to-grasp case. The perfect solution for effortless vlogging and leveraging Nikon’s expertise in lenses and accessories to break down the barriers of creativity.
The Z 30, the new unstoppable hybrid on video
With its 125 minutes of continuous recording on the clock, there is no doubt that the Z 30 is aimed at videographers. Capable of filming in 4K UHD 30 fps, it also ensures beautiful shots in slow motion in Full HD (1080p) 120 fps, as well as timelapses to enrich his videos.
A permanent autofocus supports photographers in their process, making it easier to shoot on the fly. The manufacturer has not forgotten to include an electronic image stabilizer and an integrated stereo microphone, although it is of course possible to add an external microphone to the case.
Despite its small size, the Z 30 does not overlook comfort of use. Its deep grip ensures a firm grip and its adjustable screen, essential for making quality videos, is configured to respond to the finger at the eye of the user. Smart, the self-portrait mode releases, for example, any information from the screen when it is facing forward in order to leave plenty of room for the subject.
A versatile APS-C that is just as effective in photography
Nikon does not however forget the photo part of its case. The Z 30 is equipped with a 20.9MP DX CMOS sensor. In APS-C format, it provides exposure compensation from -5 to +5 EV, as well as an ISO range of 100 to 51,200. Nikon’s classic modes (Auto, P, S , A and M) are complemented by three customizable modes.
In RAW (Nikon’s NEF) or JPG format, phase/contrast detection autofocus is able to track a subject’s eyes as well as animals. As for the burst, the Z 30 offers up to 11 fps with AF / AE, honorable performance for dynamic photos.
On the connection side, the Z 30 has an HDMI output, a USB C port and a 3.5 mm jack plug. The single memory slot can accommodate an SD or SDHC card. Finally, it is compatible with the entire range of NIKKOR Z or F mount lenses, provided you use an adapter.
The Nikon Z 30 will be available for purchase from July 14 at the recommended price of 799 euros for the bare body. Note that it can also be acquired with a Z 30 Vlogger kit containing the Nikkor Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR lens, a SmallRig tripod and windscreen, as well as the ML-L7 remote control for 999.99 euros.
