The German film “Nothing New in the West” is no less than nine times in the running for an Oscar. This is how the stars of the film reacted.

A German film is one of the big winners in the nominations for the 95th Academy Awards. “Nothing New in the West”, the remake of the anti-war novel by Erich Maria Remarque (1898-1970), was not only nominated for “Best International Film” but also in the main category “Best Film”. There were also seven other nominations for the Netflix production – for music, sound, screenplay, make-up, equipment, camera and visual effects. The stars of the film took to social media this Tuesday (January 24) to be thrilled with the success after the nominations were announced.

Aaron Hilmer (23, embodies Albert Kropp) posted a picture, which lists all the nominations for the film, and commented, “Congratulations to the whole team, it’s crazy, thanks!” Moritz Klaus (23, Frantz Müller) shared the nomination list in an Instagram story.

Devid Striesow (49, General Friedrich) wrote to the picture an Oscar trophy: “Nine nominations for ‘Nothing New on the West’!!!” Edin Hasanović (30, Tjaden Stackfleet) also posted a picture of a golden boy and briefly commented on it: “9!!!!!!!”

“Nothing New in the West” makes history

Netflix has in a dedicated Instagram post emphasizes that “Nothing New in the West” is writing film history: “For the first time ever, a German film has been nominated in the most important category, ‘Best Film’. With nine Oscar nominations, Edward Berger’s anti-war drama is the first German feature film in 40 years to win more than has been nominated twice for the most important film awards in the world. I’ll open the champagne now.”

The jury, which sent the film into the Oscar race as a German candidate, praised the Netflix production as a “radical work”. “Nothing new in the West” shows “relentlessly the machinery and dehumanization of war”. It went on to say: “Edward Berger explains very clearly how the vain, unworldly decision-makers in arrogant vanity send the young soldiers into battle and sacrifice them without any conscience. The first German film adaptation of the almost hundred-year-old novel by Erich Maria Remarque is of frightening topicality and sends a strong signal against war.” Other actors include Felix Kammerer (27), Albrecht Schuch (37) and Daniel Brühl (44).
