Retrogaming is gaining momentum in the iOS ecosystem with the release of the paid emulator Folium which supports Game Boy Advance Nintendo DS games and for the first time Nintendo 3DS.

The opening of the App Store to retro game emulators, prompted by the digital markets regulation (Digital Market Acts or DMA), is entitled to a nice boost with the arrival of Folium for iPhone. This multi-system emulator allows you to play Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS titles.

The application is available for €5.99 for iPhones running iOS 15 (or later) but it can also be used with iPadOS 15, visionOS 1 or macOS 12. Folium is the first retro game emulator to support Nintendo 3DS on iPhone. You must load ROMs of titles that you have purchased beforehand because the application does not provide any system files.

Folium is compatible with many game controllers

For those wondering about the handling of these console games on an iPhone, know that Folium is compatible with the Joy-Cons of the Nintendo Switch, the DualShock and DualSense of the PlayStation as well as those of the Xbox and Xbox Series .

Comparative

According to initial feedback from users on Reddit and specialized sites, it is better to have a recent iPhone or iPad to play in good conditions. Performance seems to vary from game to game and Folium does not offer specific settings. But its developer promises updates that will optimize operation and ergonomics.

Other retro game emulators on iPhone

The iGBA Game Boy emulator was the first to hit the App Store last month. Alas, it was quickly kicked out for copyright infringement because it turned out to be a copy of the open source GBA4iOS emulator.

In addition to Folium, the App Store now offers other emulators such as Provenance (compatible with NES, SNES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, Nintendo DS, Atari, Sega and PlayStation games), Delta, Gamma (for games from the PlayStation 1) or RetroArch which supports more than 50 consoles.
