Nintendo eShop: it will soon no longer be possible to buy new games on Wii U and 3DS!

It had to happen one day, but we didn’t think so soon. nintendo just announced that he would soon make it impossible to buy new software on theeShop Wii U and 3DS, and even download free demos and software present in the store. This should greatly complicate legal access to certain games, forcing players to turn to the purchase of second-hand titles which will mechanically become increasingly rare and expensive…

Concretely :

  • As of May 23, 2022, it will no longer be possible to use a credit card to add funds to an account in the Nintendo eShop on Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • As of August 29, 2022, it will no longer be possible to use a Nintendo eShop Card to add funds to an account in Nintendo eShop on Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. However, it will still be possible to redeem the download codes until the end of March 2023.
  • Users who link their Nintendo Network ID wallet (used with Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems) to their Nintendo Account wallet (used with Nintendo Switch family of systems) can use the shared balance to purchase content on either of these consoles until the end of March 2023. After that, the balance can only be used to purchase content for the Nintendo Switch family of consoles.

And from the end of March 2023, there will no longer be a solution to buy paid software or even get new free software. These changes also affect purchases in-game in experiences like StreetPass Mii Plaza, Theme Shop and Nintendo Badge Arcade. Several individual initiatives should arise to circumvent these new rules. For example, Pokémon Bankfree application, but requiring an annual subscription at €4.99 to unlock all its possibilities, will become free : if you download the software before the end of March 2023, you will therefore be able to fully exploit it until further notice.

In contrast, it will still be possible to redownload games and DLCs already purchased, receive software updates and enjoy online play on Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. But with such a rushed schedule back home nintendowe can only fear the end of these possibilities in the years to come…
