According to the Nikkei Asia newspaper, Nintendo would consider a 10% drop in its sales of Switch consoles for its fiscal year 2022. That is still nearly 20 million units sold. The shortage of semiconductors and production problems are the cause. But the firm is working on other solutions.
This is a figure to make the competition green with envy. If confirmed during the presentation of the results for the past fiscal year on May 10, Nintendo should announce lower sales forecasts for its current fiscal year. In any case, this is what Nikkei announces from a reliable source.
According to the economic media, the Japanese firm would foresee a drop of 10% compared to the 2021 financial year, or nearly 20 million Nintendo Switch all the same. However, this is a drop of 30% compared to the sumptuous year 2020 and its various confinements around the world (28.83 million consoles), but in a market marked by the shortage of components, it is still more how honourable.
High numbers, but falling
Nevertheless, even if the small console does not know the crisis, it sees its sales drop. For 2021, Nintendo is expected to announce a 20% decrease from the previous year. The Kyoto firm had announced a record number of 30 million consoles sold (Switch, Switch Lite and Switch Oled), but the shortage of semiconductors has gone through this and its production figures had to be revised downwards.
Released in 2017, the Switch, which has just celebrated its fifth anniversary, is nevertheless doing like a charm. It became the manufacturer’s best-selling Nintendo home console (more than 103.5 million Switch), surpassing the Wii, which was thought to be untouchable. Its catalog is always full, successfully relaunching the games of yesteryear via its Nintendo Switch Online + Additional Pack subscription or in a modernized version such as the very recent Nintendo Switch Sports.
Nintendo would like to increase production, says Nikkei. But between the component problems and the renewed epidemic of the coronavirus in China where the consoles are manufactured, the course is difficult to hold. This is probably why Switch sales in 2022 could fall below 20 million units. To compensate for these losses, Big N could therefore accelerate the deployment of its game releases and bet a little more on the catalog of its subscription service with the addition of new retrogaming titles and functions.
