Nintendo Switch “2”: new rumors focus on the controllers of the next Nintendo console

In the absence of official communication from Nintendo, many observers are looking to know what the next console from the Japanese manufacturer will be. Today, it is a Spanish site which indicates that it is in possession of serious information concerning the controllers of this future machine.

Launched in 2017, the Nintendo Switch has most likely entered the last phase of its existence. The schedule of games developed internally or published by the brand is very limited, and we know nothing about what awaits us at the end of the year. Nintendo hasn’t announced anything concrete, which has created fertile ground for rumors and indiscretions. If we have to sort it out, part of what is said seems very credible, and we do seem to be heading towards a Switch “2”.

Magnetic controllers for the Switch 2?

After a year 2023 marked by the releases of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Pikmin 4, Super Mario Bros. Wonder or even Metroid Prime Remasterd and Fire Emblem Engage, Nintendo is having a very quiet year in 2024. The manufacturer is scouring its catalog with the remakes of Super Mario RPG, Mario vs Donkey Kong and Paper Mario and the Thousand-Year Door, but also with the port of Luigi’s Mansion 2. The only new thing: Princess Peach Showtime! Suffice to say that we feel that the end is near, but, for the moment, Nintendo is careful not to announce anything despite the drop in sales.

In the meantime, the Spanish site Vandal indicates that it has received reliable information from one of the manufacturers who would be in charge of producing the consoles. These sources state that the Nintendo Switch 2, an unofficial name used for convenience, would more or less take up the Joy-Con system of the Nintendo Switch. However, the new version of these detachable controllers would be based on an attachment system using magnetic strips, abandoning the small rail and the stop.

In other words, the current Joy-Cons would not work on the new machine, unlike the Pro controller. Vandal specifies that the information collected comes from people who “were able to touch the new Nintendo console”. As usual, this information, even credible, should be taken with a grain of salt until the Kyoto-based manufacturer decides to speak out.

The outlines of the next console are becoming clearer

Expected by many players and having the difficult task of succeeding the global hit that is the Nintendo Switch, the Switch “2” has long been the subject of speculation, indiscretions, and rumors. Currently, the trend indicates that the new console will be announced by the end of the year, for release in early 2025. Nintendo would also have, according to Nikkei, the ambition to produce ten million units of its machine to avoid stock shortages and the entry of crooks.

According to other information, the new machine would approach what the PS4 offers, but would lack an OLED screen at launch. Nintendo would have preferred an 8-inch Sharp LCD panel, much less expensive and keeping the price around $400.

Faced with the success of the Switch, Nintendo would have decided to produce a new iteration, rather than trying at all costs to offer a new gimmick. For many, the Nintendo Switch and its hybrid dimension constitute a form of achievement in terms of concept, which simply needs to be improved.
