Little by little, Nio, a Chinese start-up specializing in the manufacture of electric vehicles, is making its nest in Europe. After having tested the Norwegian market (SUV ES8), like any new car manufacturer wishing to launch into the electric vehicle, Nio began its European expansion with Germany and the Netherlands.

On October 7, 2022, it was in Berlin that the Chinese brand unveiled its three electric vehicles, the ET7, ET5 and EL7, respectively two sedans and an SUV. Following this presentation, German and Dutch customers were able to touch their first Nio electric vehicles, namely ET7 sedans.

Continuing its momentum, the Chinese manufacturer has just announced the first deliveries of ET7 in Sweden, the fourth European market in Nio’s strategy. If the brand has released photos of the first two happy Swedish owners, we do not know the number of copies reserved for this Scandinavian country.

Good news never comes alone, Nio has also just opened its first battery exchange station in Valberg, south of Gothenburg, Sweden. It is the third Nio station after the two opened in Germany. This is one of the characteristics of Nio. Indeed, the batteries can either be rented or purchased with the vehicle which, initially, was offered only on subscription. But faced with growing demand, the company has reviewed its position and will offer its models for sale from 2023. It must be said that the monthly subscription is not really within the reach of all budgets. If the prices are not known for the ET7, those of the ET5 are: from 999 € in Germany, 1089 € in the Netherlands, 10,899 SEK (992 €) in Sweden and 8499 DKK (1143 € ) in Denmark.

The station makes it possible to exchange a small capacity battery for a larger one in the event of long journeys to be made. In addition, these removable and scalable batteries can be recharged on both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) with, for the latter, a charging speed of up to 140 kW. During the presentation in Berlin, Danielo Teobaldi, chief engineer of Nio, had announced the imminent arrival of a 150 kW battery allowing a range of 1000 km. In total, nearly 120 battery exchange stations will be deployed in Europe.

Nio ET7: 5 Euro NCAP stars and 2022 gold steering wheel in Germany

Barely arrived in Europe, the Nio ET7 has already won two prestigious awards. The first was awarded by the safety organization Euro NCAP, which awarded the vehicle 5 stars, the maximum score. The same score was obtained from Green NCAP, a cousin organization of Euro NCAP, which analyzes the environmental impact of a car taking into account its complete life cycle. The electric sedan is part of a top three comprising the Tesla Model 3 and the Renault Megane E-Tech, sacred references.

Finally, the Nio ET7 received the prestigious Golden Steering Wheel, or gold steering wheel in French, in the “Medium and upper class” car category. This award, the most important for car manufacturers, has been awarded since 1976 by the Sunday newspaper Bild am Sonntagand since 2009, in collaboration with Auto Picture (the equivalent ofAuto More with us).

It is the very first Chinese car to be titled. For Nio, it’s a form of consecration knowing that the Mercedes-Benz EQE, the Citroën C5 X, the Genesis Motors G80 and the Kia EV6 competed against ET7. This year, the public and the experts had to decide between 47 vehicles divided into 11 categories. (source Nio)

It remains to be seen when Nio will land in France…
