The Nissan group is preparing the launch of a new version of its Qashqai, called E-Power.

A 100% electric version, but which will be driven… by a combustion engine. Explanations.

The Nissan Qashqai in hybrid E-Power version

Rather than offering a new hybrid or electric version of its Qashqai, Nissan has chosen an alternative version with this new E-Power version. Indeed, the manufacturer reproduces the scheme already adopted by its Note in Japan a few years ago, namely a car that moves electrically, but which is powered by a heat engine.

Under the hood of this Nissan Qashqai E-Power, there is therefore an electric motor that provides propulsion for the vehicle. The latter, however, coexists with a heat engine, namely a 1.5 L 3-cylinder petrol block, which will have the sole and unique objective of generating electricity, with a total power of 140 W (about 190 hp) for 330 Nm of torque.

In this way, the SUV is able to move at low speed in 100% electric mode, but can call on its heat engine as soon as the acceleration is more frank. A solution that optimizes the driving experience according to Nissan, allowing the driver to benefit from an engine that reacts instantly to acceleration, without the slightest delay.

An atypical engine

The Nissan Qashqai E-Power does not have any charging sockets. Indeed, we find here only this good old fuel door, since only the combustion engine (connected to a generator) is able to supply the electrical section and recharge the battery (2.1 kWh) of the vehicle.

Nissan Qashqai E-Power

An engine that promises, according to Nissan, an average consumption of 5.3 L/100 km, with a range that would flirt with 900 km. An atypical engine therefore, with a Qashqai E-Power which is not intended to be ” an electric vehicle according to Matthew Wright, vice-president of Nissan Europe, but who offers an electric driving experience for anyone who is not yet ready for a 100% electric vehicle “.
