NIU is entering the automotive sector, unveiling on January 12, its first electric car called “NIUTRON NV”.
The world leader in electric scooters is thinking big by diversifying its product range. After the success of its electric bicycles, electric scooters and motorcycles, NIU is attacking the automotive sector.
A newcomer to the electric car industry
NIU had warned us. In December 2021, Li Yinan, the founder and chairman of the company announced the creation of his own brand of electric vehicle named “NIUTRON”. Less than a month after this announcement, he reveals a copy to us.
The Chinese manufacturer specializing in electric scooters has moved from two-wheelers to four-wheelers, offering in a short time its very first SUV from the NIUTRON brand, the NV. It will soon be sold in two versions: BEV (battery electric vehicle) or PHEV (plug-in hybrid vehicle).
A vehicle with attractive attributes
The vehicle sports a fairly classic design and classic dimensions in its category. In terms of style, her look Urban Explorer is inspired by the Ford Bronco urban off-roader. It is 4.92 m long, 1.95 m wide and 2.90 m wheelbase. If the manufacturer has not put the package on the design aspect, it is to better focus on the performance of its car and make it more attractive.
For now, few features of this NIUTRON NV SUV have been revealed. We know that this one will have four-wheel drive and it will be able to reach a speed of 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds. It is based on a versatile platform called “Gemini”. This would accommodate an electrically powered battery or a range extender, which would no doubt be offered as an option.
Until now, NIU has preferred to remain discreet about the price of its new electric car, as well as its exact autonomy. However, the revealed images reveal that the EREV battery included in this vehicle is quite bulky, which says a lot about its performance. We only know that the company will start production of the NVs at its Changzhou-based factory next March. Orders can therefore be opened by mid-2022.
