Ex-DFB bosses plan joint statement

The list of DFB presidents who left office early is long. Three of them now want to spread a joint statement at the association’s Bundestag. What is it about? Not clear. However, it should not become an election recommendation.

According to a report by “Kicker”, the former DFB presidents Theo Zwanziger, Reinhard Grindel and Fritz Keller want to make a joint statement in front of the association’s Bundestag. Keller explained to “Kicker” that the statement would not be a recommendation for the election of the President.

Almost a year after Keller’s resignation, a new president for the German Football Association (DFB) will be voted on in Bonn on Friday. The delegates have the choice between Bernd Neuendorf, who is supported by the influential amateur football, and former Schalke CFO Peter Peters, who is considered a candidate for professional football.

According to “Kicker”, Peters had invited the former association leaders Keller (2019-2021), Grindel (2016-2019), Zwanziger (2004-2012) and Wolfgang Niersbach (2012-2015) to a meeting in Frankfurt/Main. “I took the initiative and invited them to the exchange and dinner,” said Peters. Only Niersbach canceled his participation.

“A broad consensus was reached during the talks,” said Peters. Among other things, “the current events and the role of Mr. Koch” were discussed. The participants of the meeting agreed that with Rainer Koch, who is again running for vice president, a new start at the DFB is not possible. Since Keller’s resignation almost a year ago, Peters and Koch have been running the association on an interim basis. The relationship between the two is considered broken.
