No Haaland, but a dream free kick: City rolls over Chelsea in 45 minutes

No Haaland, but dream free kick
City roll over Chelsea in 45 minutes

No duel at eye level: Manchester City clearly shows the limits of a much too passive Chelsea FC in the first half and moves into the 4th round of the FA Cup. Coach Pep Guardiola can even allow goalscorer Erling Haaland to stew on the bench for 90 minutes.

For national soccer player Kai Havertz and Chelsea FC, the traditional FA Cup is over in the third round. Last year’s finalist lost 0: 4 (0: 3) to Premier League champions Manchester City. Havertz was in the starting XI, but had to make way for ex-Gladbacher Denis Zakaria at the break.

Thanks to three goals within 15 minutes, the game was decided before the break in favor of City, in which the German World Cup participant Ilkay Gündogan and striker Erling Haaland were not used. Riyad Mahrez with a direct free kick (23′), Julian Alvarez (30′, penalty kick) and Phil Foden (38′) quickly made things clear before Mahrez made the final score again with a penalty kick (85′).

Germany coach David Wagner started his second spell in English football in the same competition with a defeat. The former FC Schalke coach lost 1-0 (0-1) to Blackburn Rovers on his debut with second-division side Norwich City. Visiting striker Jack Vale scored the goal of the evening in the 31st minute.

Wagner (51) was on the sidelines at Huddersfield Town between 2015 and 2019, led the “Terriers” to the Premier League and spent his most successful time as head coach there. The following stations at Schalke and most recently at the Swiss first division club Young Boys Bern each ended prematurely.
