Tuchel leaves cynicism alone – and receives the next wads

Lothar Matthäus is made round like a rebellious schoolboy – by Thomas Tuchel. His sarcastic interview after Bayern’s victory at BVB caused ridicule and renewed criticism. But the coach is completely unaffected, at least outwardly.

After the dispute with record national player Lothar Matthäus, Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel has no interest in a private discussion – and at the same time finds himself exposed to new criticism. “I have enough to do in my job,” said Tuchel on Bild TV after the 4-0 win at Borussia Dortmund. He usually doesn’t have private meetings with television experts. When asked whether he would drink a gin and tonic with Matthäus again, the Munich coach said: “I don’t drink alcohol during the season.”

Before and after the top game, Tuchel reacted irritably to the criticism from Matthäus and Dietmar Hamann after the record winner’s cup exit at third division club 1. FC Saarbrücken. After the 4-0 win on Saturday, he had a verbal duel with Matthäus and Sky presenter Sebastian Hellmann at the Sky TV interview table.

“I’m now asked about Didi Hamann and Lothar Matthäus every week. I don’t feel like standing in the middle and making comments. Today was the day to finally say that. I won’t go into it any further,” said Tuchel : “It’s good at some point, we understood it too. It was enough.”

This Sunday, former Bayern champion coach Felix Magath was surprised that Tuchel reacted irritably to statements from experts. That doesn’t make a good impression. “Actually, there’s nothing going on in the league yet. FC Bayern only had a terrible cup day. As a coach you also have to take criticism,” said Magath also on Bild TV. “I don’t see any indecent criticism yet. If the coach is already reacting so sensitively, it probably won’t be an easy season.” The 70-year-old explained: “I’m also of the opinion that things aren’t going well yet. You don’t get the impression that the team is stable yet.” Magath also expressed doubts as to whether Tuchel would still be coach in Munich at the end of the season.
