The Dasung Paperlike 253 is a 25.3 inch screen that costs well over 1000 euros. But it can only display 16 shades of gray!
A monitor that can only display 16 different shades of gray. This is the Dasung Paperlike 253. It uses an e-ink display, similar to the one you know from Kindle. The particular advantage of this screen, which at first glance looks so completely antiquated: It is supposed to be easy on the eyes.
According to the manufacturer, Dasung, the 16: 9 screen should not flicker at all and should not emit any blue light. Blue light is seen by critics as harmful to the eyes, but there are certainly eye experts who contradict this: Eye experts – blue light harms neither eyes nor sleep – just “blue nonsense”.
Instead, the screen surface is illuminated with an old-fashioned front light (similar to that of some e-readers). The manufacturer does not specify the refresh rate, but the display can be operated in text, graphics or video mode, whereby the company touts a “Turbo” system for fast refresh rates and low latency times. The speed of the e-ink panel is probably something lower than the usual 60 Hertz.Target group of this Dasung Paperlike 253 are people who read a lot of text on the screen.

The 16-grayscale monitor has a screen diagonal of 25.3 inches and has a resolution of 3200 x 1800 pixels. It can be attached according to the well-known VESA standard and set up with an adjustable stand. On the back you will find connections for HDMI, DisplayPort and USB-C as well as three USB-A connections and a headphone jack.
The price is steep, however: the 16-grayscale monitor costs the equivalent of around 1270 euros in China and in Japan it is apparently sold for around 2,213 euros, as our colleagues in our sister publication PC-World have researched. According to Toms Hardware, the Dasing Paperlike 253 is only available in China and Japan.
