False joy for those allergic to Windows 11 : an EdgeOS alternative, it will not be for now.
On Twitter, the user FireCube, a source presented as rather reliable and well informed about Microsoft’s projects, published an evocative screenshot accompanied by an equally explicit message. The content of this publication? The Redmond firm’s desire to rename its Windows 11 operating system, which was launched less than a year ago, to “EdgeOS”. Let’s give the benefit of the doubt to FireCube, who may have just wanted to play a little joke; it is in any case a gross fake.
Not the best fake
The capture hints at a purported EdgeOS beta in a window similar to “About Windows” (which you can easily bring up on your terminal by pressing Windows + R and then typing “winver”).
Simply, the counterfeit is badly made. Its author did not bother to change “About Windows” and the text contains a conspicuous error at the end of the first line. In short, it is clearly not the work of a Frank Abagnale Jr. 2.0.
Edge, Microsoft’s mini OS bis
While Microsoft probably does not intend to release an EdgeOS in the near future, its teams are however striving to improve Edge with features that bring it closer to a small operating system.
Determined to make Edge the “browser for gamers”, the company has, for example, integrated Clarity Boost technology into Edge 103. For game streaming via Xbox Game Pass (Xbox Cloud Gaming), this feature improves streaming thanks to spatial upscaling. In the same vein, let’s talk about an efficiency mode inspired by Opera GX. As the name suggests, this mode puts tabs to sleep when launching a game to optimize performance.
Add to that the possibility of saving media in Collections or the integration of an editing tool allowing you to directly modify photos found on the web, and you have a browser far from a simple HTTP client.
