Esken wants to remain head of the SPD

SPD leader Esken has made a decision: At the party conference in December, she wants to apply again for the office of party chairman.

The SPD chairwoman Saskia Esken wants to run again for the party leadership. You have “decided to renew my application for the highest office in the party,” she said Stuttgart newspapers. “I see my task in modernizing the SPD, strengthening its historically grown values and developing social democratic ideas and positions from this with the members and in exchange with society.” She is not aiming for a ministerial office.

She went on to say: “Norbert Walter-Borjans and I have achieved a lot in the past two years. The SPD is united, successful and strong as it has not been for years. I would like to continue on this path.” Their co-chairman Walter-Borjans had announced at the end of October that he did not want to be elected for another term. Esken and Walter-Borjans have been party leaders since 2019. “Now younger people should run,” said the 69-year-old as a reason for his resignation. It is now considered likely that the current SPD General Secretary Lars Klingbeil will be his successor.

The announcement by Walter-Borjans put Esken under pressure to explain itself as well. On Tuesday evening, she said in a switching conference of the SPD board that she wanted to decide by Monday whether she would run again. Then the party executive wants to submit a personnel proposal who should lead the party in the future.

In the event that Esken would have sought a ministerial office, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig was in discussion for the party chairmanship. The SPD still wants to avoid that its chairmen sit in the federal government at the same time. The SPD elects a new party leadership at its party conference in Berlin in December.
