Despite the rapid spread of the corona virus, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro does not believe in exit restrictions in the fight against the pandemic – on the contrary: "You did not stay at home. You were not cowardly," said Bolsonaro, according to media reports, at the inauguration of part of a section Railway line in São Simão in the state of Goiás to the workers. "No more whining." He had previously called those who urge the government to buy vaccines "idiots" at another event.

Brazil, which started vaccination in January, is one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic. 10,793,732 people were infected with the coronavirus in the largest country in Latin America – only in the USA and India are the numbers even higher. 260,970 people have died in connection with Covid-19. On Tuesday (1641) and Wednesday (1910), Brazil, a state with 210 million inhabitants, registered maximum values for the corona deaths recorded within 24 hours.

The health system in cities like São Paulo and the southern states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, which are dominated by German immigrants, are on the verge of collapse. The health council recently called for a nationwide curfew. In Rio de Janeiro, for example, bars and restaurants have to close at 5 p.m. on Friday.
