Johnson stays with Plan B despite record numbers
Most recently, more than 218,000 new infections were reported in the UK – in one day. British experts call for tough measures. Prime Minister Johnson, meanwhile, is sticking to the course he has been taking for a few weeks – and justifies this with courses.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson wants to get by without stricter restrictions despite a record number of new corona infections in England. The conservative politician announced in London that he would stick to his so-called Plan B. This includes a mask requirement indoors, the recommendation to work from home, and 3-G certificates (i.e.: vaccinated, recovered or tested) for clubs and major events. The plan has been in place for several weeks.
Many experts are calling for tougher measures to prevent the health system from being overloaded, as is already being suggested in some clinics. Because of the high number of new infections, many hospitals are absent. More than 218,000 new infections were reported in the UK today. This includes some late registrations from the past few days. The seven-day incidence – i.e. the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within a week – was last at 1597 (as of December 30) and has now reached 1800, almost all of which were due to the Omikron variant.
Omikron was able to spread quickly among the 18 to 50 year olds, quoted “The Guardian“from a BBC interview with the epidemiologist Neil Ferguson. The modeler at Imperial College London assumes that the case numbers are even” much higher “than officially reported. They are currently not fully recorded, as in some areas due to the enormous many new infections had run out of test material.
Johnson justifies his line with the fact that it has now been proven that the omicron variant prevalent in England and Scotland causes milder courses of Covid-19. There would not be so many infected people in intensive care units. Nine out of ten patients in the intensive care units have not yet had a booster vaccination, it said. Johnson again called on his compatriots to get a booster vaccination.
