BVB pays Schulz 2.5 million euros to leave

He has been discarded for more than a year, and speculation has been going on for months as to how Borussia Dortmund can get rid of Nico Schulz. BVB is now terminating the contract with the left-back by mutual agreement – and will probably have to dig deep into their pockets for this.

Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund has terminated the contract with ex-national player Nico Schulz by mutual agreement. This was announced by the runner-up without giving any details. “Bild” and “Ruhr Nachrichten” had previously reported a severance payment of around 2.5 million euros, a little less than half of Schulz’s reported annual salary. His contract ran until 2024.

“We are all aware that things have not developed as hoped for Borussia Dortmund and Nico Schulz in recent years. Nevertheless, we wish Nico all the best for his sporting and personal future,” said sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

No competitive game last season

The twelve-time national player came to BVB from Hoffenheim in 2019 for around 25 million euros, but could never really justify the high transfer fee and only played 40 Bundesliga games in four years – the last in May 2022. Under coach Edin Terzić, the former Hertha and Gladbach player no longer played a role.

Since the start of the new pre-season, the former national player has been released from training to look for a new club. As in previous transfer periods, however, this search was not crowned with success. BVB wanted to avoid starting another year with the left-back as Schulz would no longer play a sporting role with the black and yellow. That was already the case in 2022/2023 when Schulz did not play a single competitive game for Borussia Dortmund.

If the 30-year-old had sat out his last year of contract until next summer, Dortmund would have had to pay an estimated 5.5 million euros. Schulz only made 61 appearances in his four years in Dortmund.
