No radio contact – Eurofighters intercept Israeli plane

The Austrian Armed Forces received an alarm on Monday afternoon: the radio link to a plane operated by the Israeli airline El Al had been lost. Two Eurofighters on standby immediately took off from Zeltweg and set course for the aircraft, which was just over Spittal/Drau in Carinthia.

The plane of Israel’s largest airline was traveling from Amsterdam to Tel Aviv. As Michael Bauer, spokesman for the Ministry of Defense in Vienna, reported, the Eurofighter alarm went off at 1.08 p.m. Only a few minutes later the all-clear could be given. It should therefore not have been an emergency. Radio communication with the Israeli aircraft, a Boeing 777-258, was restored at 1:20 p.m. It is not yet known why the radio connection was broken.
