No re-election – scramble for the university executive chair

The decision about the future of university rector Lehnert has been made – at least for the time being. However, it was not the Senate who hit her, but Hendrik Lehnert himself.

The university senate meeting, in which the members should actually have decided on the reappointment of the rector, took a completely surprising turn yesterday. Shortly before the vote, Hendrik Lehnert asked the Senate to re-advertise his position. The goal of the university boss was quite different until recently: to be able to remain rector for five more years without having to apply again. For this, however, Lehnert would have needed the majority of votes in the Senate – whether he would have achieved it remains to be seen. Where did the sudden change of heart come from? Lehnert justifies his decision by saying that he “supports the desire of many university members to organize the rector election in an open process”. Accordingly, Lehnert wants to use a regular application process for his second term. In university circles, however, there are rumors that the spontaneous change of opinion could also have other motives. The result of the vote was not foreseeableSo opinions at the university have been divided for a long time about Rector Lehnert’s management course. The resentment culminated in a motion to vote out last December. At the time, anonymous critics accused him of poor communication and inadequate personnel policies. Lehnert escaped being voted out by a hair’s breadth, six months later the situation hasn’t changed. Yesterday’s decision would probably have been close again – maybe not in his favor this time. In any case, thanks to his advance, Hendrik Lehnert does not have to accept the potential defeat. However, he himself asserted that fear of losing the vote had played no role in his decision. Regardless of the reasons for which Lehnert changed his mind, there are finally no longer any limits to the scramble for the executive chair at the University of Salzburg. Malicious software has been removed, mail is starting up Uni removed the malware. The employees are now gradually restarting e-mail programs and other services. The hackers neither stole data nor made any claims. Specialists therefore assume that the attack should damage the reputation of the university.
