No respite for Huawei, which represents “an unacceptable risk” according to the United States

The United States renews the embargo against Huawei to ensure that future telecommunications products from the Chinese brand continue to be banned from the American market. “An unacceptable risk” for citizens is mentioned to justify this decision.

Just in case. The United States has already imposed a very severe embargo against Huawei since 2019 – preventing, among other things, the brand’s smartphones from carrying Google services – but they have decided to add a small layer. As indicated Reutersthe administration of President Joe Biden has banned the approval of new telecommunications equipment from Huawei (as well as ZTE under the same embargo).

In other words, Washington is simply ensuring that future Huawei products continue to be banned from the US market. This is not a surprise, but the American authorities still took the opportunity to slip a new tackle by explaining that the Chinese giant represented “an unacceptable risk“. Remarks supported in a press release by the Federal Communications Commission better known by the acronym FCC. This organization is responsible for validating telecommunications products intended for sale in the United States.

Tensions persist

FCC Chairman Jessica Rosenworcel said in a statement that “these new rules are an important part of our ongoing actions to protect the American people from national security threats involving telecommunications“. This decision also affects three new Chinese firms: two surveillance specialists (Dahua Technology and Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology) and a telecommunications equipment vendor (Hytera Communications).

This new blow to Huawei shows that the situation remains tense between the United States and China. The two great superpowers are engaged in a war of influence that is both commercial and geopolitical. Washington has also recently applied restrictions aimed at hampering a large part of the Chinese economy. And meanwhile, the friction around the Taiwan situation is still a particularly sensitive subject.
