France star tears up Flensburg’s clean slate at the last second

Now SG Flensburg-Handewitt is also hit: the last club in the handball Bundesliga that was still free of losing points has to accept a setback. At HC Erlangen, however, there are points for the first time – when veteran coach Martin Schwalb returns to the league. The Füchse Berlin win easily.

SG Flensburg-Handewitt suffered its first loss of points in the handball Bundesliga. At VfL Gummersbach, SG coach Nicolej Krickau’s team only managed a 29:29 (13:15). The North Germans continue to lead the table with 9:1 points. The best throwers were Kentin Mahé from Gummersbach and Emil Jakobsen from Flensburg with eight hits each.

The SG initially had an unusual number of problems in attack. The North Germans only managed two goals in the first twelve minutes. In the 19th minute, Gummersbach was in the lead with 10:7. The ex-Flensburg player Mahé in particular set important accents at VfL.

In the second half the lead changed back and forth several times. From the 37th minute onwards, neither team managed to score more than one goal. In the 59th minute, Kay Smits made it 29:27 for Flensburg. It wasn’t enough to win, as Milos Vujovic and Mahé equalized for Gummersbach.

Schwalb leads Erlangen to their first victory

Meanwhile, HC Erlangen had their first win of the season. Under their new coach Martin Schwalb, the Franconians won 23:19 (12:9) against promoted team 1. VfL Potsdam. The Brandenburgers remain the only team in the league with no points. For the 61-year-old Schwalb, it was the first Bundesliga game after more than three years as coach.

In the meeting between the only two teams without a point until then, Erlangen’s top talent Tim Gömmel was the best thrower with seven goals in front of 5,211 spectators, while David Cyrill Akakpo scored four times for Potsdam. Both teams played nervously and made many mistakes.

Schwalb, who most recently coached the Rhein-Neckar Löwen until 2021, surprisingly took over the head coach position in Erlangen last week. A little later he lost his debut 27:28 in the DHB Cup against VfL Gummersbach.

Runner-up Füchse Berlin solved their mandatory task at HSG Wetzlar with a 35:24 (20:11) score and celebrated their fourth win in the fifth game of the season. TBV Lemgo Lippe also inflicted their second defeat of the season on the well-started SC DHfK Leipzig with a 33:28 (14:10).
