Unfortunately, you will have to go through the France Identity application to present your identity document and we will explain why.

The Cards application of the iPhone allows you to get rid of a good number of plastic supports which take up an important place in your wallet.

Cards proposes to replace your wallet

You can of course store your bank card(s) there and swap your good old credit card for Apple Pay, Apple’s mobile payment solution which allows contactless payment for all merchants with a terminal equipped with a NFC chip.

Cards also allows you to swipe many types of documents such as loyalty cards, travel tickets when you take the train or plane, or even concert and cinema tickets.

With the appearance of the new French identity card, the government launched the France Identity project, an application to digitize its plastic support in order to present it from its smartphone to the police or the administrations.

One would have thought that the latter could be imported into Apple’s Maps application. However, this will not be the case.

The ID card will not go into Cards to ensure the security of personal data

The National Agency for Secured Titles (ANTS) has indeed indicated to our colleagues of the Parisian that the digital identity card will remain in the France Identity application, which must be used each time you wish to present your card or proof of identity.

The ANTS thus explains that the administration wishes to keep in their bosom ” a sovereign function and not giving up national data to a private actor “. ” The more data is transferred to the smartphone, the more the attack surface for hackers increases “, she continues.

The iPhone will however be able to read the information from the identity card, new format, with iOS 16. Apple has indeed modified the management of the NFC chip by the operating system and it will be possible from France Identity to scan its card to retrieve the information contained in the biometric chip integrated into the identity document.

The beta of the France Identity application is expected for the month of September on iOS before a general deployment planned for the first quarter of 2023.
