No transit of goods: Kiev sanctions Russia’s ally Iran

Kyiv sanctions Russia’s ally Iran

The regime in Iran supports Russia not only politically but also militarily by supplying drones. Ukraine is now sanctioning the country for this. It is about the transit of goods and the ban on dual-use goods.

The Ukrainian parliament has approved sanctions against Russia’s ally Iran. “This resolution synchronizes the Ukrainian sanctions with the actions of the entire civilized world towards the complete isolation of Iran,” the Ukrainian parliament said on its website. Ukraine has accused Russia of using Iranian-made drones to attack Ukrainian cities.

The sanctions package includes a ban on military and so-called dual-use goods that can be used for both civilian and military purposes, the cessation of the transit of these goods through Ukraine and the “suspension of economic and financial obligations in favor of Iranian residents”. The draft law has yet to be signed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“Tehran has become a key ally of Moscow in this war and is deliberately supplying it with weapons for attacks on civilian cities,” criticized Zelenskyi adviser Mikhailo Podoliak on Sunday. In the past, the leadership in Tehran argued that the Iranian drones were delivered to Russia before the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine in February 2022. In fact, however, there is evidence that supplies to Russia also took place during the course of the Russian invasion.

For a long time, the drones have caused considerable damage, especially to Ukrainian infrastructure, for example when power plants and waterworks were targeted. In the meantime, however, the Ukrainian air defense seems to have adjusted better. According to the Ukrainian military administration, almost all drones were shot down during the last attacks. However, air defense is not equally well positioned in all parts of the country. It is extremely effective in Kiev, less so in other cities.
